KOPPEL Broadway was our first location in Wimbledon and composed of three key sections. These included Broadway Studios and Residencies at 188 The Broadway, WEST RESIDENCY at 192 The Broadway, and PAUSE/FRAME at 194 The Broadway.
Broadway Studios and Residencies was an art space dedicated to artist residencies, gallery collaborations and display installations. This space allowed a number of studio artists from other locations to work in full view of the public, transforming the windows into a canvas of ongoing artistic production. Visitors and the general public witnessed the creative process as it unfolded, blurring the lines between artist and audience and emphasising the idea that art is a continuous journey rather than a final product.
At 192 The Broadway, WEST RESIDENCY expanded the reach of Notting Hill's Studio West Residency Programme in collaboration with The Koppel Project. This partnership embodied a shared commitment to supporting emerging and mid-career artists by providing accessible resources and comprehensive support. The Koppel Project's innovative approach to repurposing abandoned spaces for artist studios aligns seamlessly with WEST RESIDENCY’s mentorship-focused programme. Here, artists gained not only studio space but also invaluable career guidance within a close-knit artistic community. The studios at 192 hosted a rotating residency for four artists every six months, fostering collaboration and dialogue within the creative sector. After the Broadway closure, the residency moved to KOPPEL Heights and it is ongoing.
KOPPEL Broadway was also home to the exciting project PAUSE/FRAME, a collaborative gallery space. Through interdisciplinary exhibitions, P/F aimed to push beyond the confines of the white cube, inviting work that responded to the space and the public around it. Each project hosted here was a dialogue between the art, the room and the people passing through. As an arts charity working across sites in London, we are in constant motion. Navigating meanwhile spaces often presents us with unique challenges, yet we embrace the opportunity to reimagine and upgrade them for artistic use. Our work adapts as we shift to different areas of the city, influenced by the character of each new neighbourhood. This ongoing movement has also shaped our curatorial approach, making every exhibition a moment of pause in an ever-changing frame(work). Together with artists, we aimed to find innovative ways to make projects happen and produce engaging exhibitions that challenge the systemic barriers often blocking creative efforts. Our goal with this space was to expand our audiences and communities, working to survive within a difficult funding climate in the arts and the structures that artists rely on for support.
