Afterimage, an image of something that you seem to see when you are no longer looking at it or when it is no longer there.
AFTERIMAGE is the first solo exhibition by Barbara LT. It will take you into her own circus - enter the world of acrobats, movement and colour!
Circus as a word and as a space holds a unique place in our collective imagery. From being used as a synonym for chaos to a place of wonder and magic. For Barbara it is not just a spectacle of colour and pushing of boundaries of human bodies, it's also about the trust in those around you, the trust in your body, of danger ending in a safe landing. The extraordinary ability and acceptance of different shapes and sizes. Of cooperation. Collaboration. Crossing the borders. Equality but also understanding specific roles in specific moments. And especially about the beauty of movement and the search for connection.
“The collection of works comes from exploration of ideas movement, time, connections and memories, which I feel are all closely connected to circus, painters and acrobats. The works invite you into the beautiful movement of human body and at the same time the serenity of time standing still – the memories of magic and happiness the amazing acrobats bring. Along with the bittersweet feeling of intense connections formed when circus is in town, then followed by the heartbreaks of separation. Just as time slowly changes our perceptions and images fade, the clarity of our memories fades. But that feeling of happiness and magic still hides under the layers, the joy of human connection remains.”
In Barbara’s art, she looks for the human behind the movement, the artist behind the performance, their story and how it speaks to their audience.
The understanding and creation is often based in a connection she develops with the circus artists and circus companies. She searches for the moments when they are most themselves, not focusing on detail but creating a sense of movement and shapes that describe them.
“My art is an invitation into exploration of incredible, of magic, of flying, of pure joy of human existence. And I hope some of that happiness felt when in presence of humanity at its best reaches those who look at and keep company to my art. I hope my art becomes your lasting AFTERIMAGE.”
